Smithfield, Rhode Island

Highlights & Homes for Sale

Smithfield, incorporated in 1730, is a small town steeped in New England town tradition located in north central Rhode Island, and is comprised of six historic villages: Esmond, Greenville, Spragueville, Stillwater, Mountaindale and Georgiaville.  Strategically located less than an hour from Boston and only minutes to downtown Providence, Smithfield offers a rural and suburban lifestyle.  Several major routes -146, 44, 116- and I295 traverse Smithfield, making it convenient and easily accessible.

Home to Bryant University, a top business school as well as a small state airport, North Central, where you can indulge your sense of adventure at Boston Skydive Center.  Smithfield has a wonderful shopping plaza in The Crossing at Smithfield, where you’ll find everything you need from groceries to crafts to home repairs and everyday items.  There are a multitude of  restaurants in town offering a great variety of cuisine including Mexican at Condesa, Italian at Siena and pub-style at Laura’s Bar & Grill .

Smithfield is noted for its many farms and orchards, and was once known as Apple Valley because of all the local apple orchards, such as Steere Orchard, Appleland Orchard and Pleasant View Orchard, which are still active today.  One of the oldest active local farms is Jaswells Farm, where you’ll find fresh picked produce, fresh baked goods (apple cider donuts!) and a nice assortment of uniquely Rhode Island food products.

For the outdoor sports enthusiast, enjoy Smithfield’s numerous hiking trails, ponds and a small beach on Slacks Pond for local residents.  Smithfield is also home to Deerfield Park – great for families – with tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic tables, shaded areas with wooden benches, restroom facilities, a small paved, looped path for hiking and/or biking and two separate, age-appropriate playgrounds (toddlers + elementary/middle schoolers).  Deerfield also has numerous athletic fields for football, lacrosse, baseball and soccer.  Whipple Field, considered to be one of the finest softball complexes in all of Rhode Island, is the host fields for Smithfield Little League teams.  It has three softball fields and two baseball fields (1 little league & 1 big league) all with lights for night games plus indoor restrooms and a full-menu concession stand.

At its heart, Smithfield is a quiet, residential community.
